MTN Ghana, the leading telecommunications company in Ghana, has launched the fourth edition of its month-long educative internet festival dubbed ‘Ifest.’
The campaign seeks to create awareness among Ghanaians across the country about the internet and its benefits.
Speaking at the launch of the festival yesterday in Accra, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Ghana, Serame Taukobong, said the internet festival would be used to empower Ghanaians to enable them enjoy the benefits of the internet.
According to him, since the introduction of the programme in 2011, MTN had recorded significant increases in its data subscriptions.
In 2013, he said the company managed to record about 25,000 new data subscriptions due to ‘ifest.’
‘We recorded close to 25,000 new data subscriptions through ifest last year, which shows that ifest has been well received in Ghana and we will not relent in our effort to drive data usage among our customers,’ he said.
Mr. Taukobong disclosed that the emergence of smartphones had contributed immensely in increasing the company’s data subscription.
He said ‘despite the significant growth over the period, there are a lot more smartphones users who are yet to connect to data and they are our main target for this year’s ifest campaign.’
The CEO urged all ‘data ambassadors to educate friends, families and clients on the numerous benefits of getting connected to the digital world through MTN data.’
Chief Marketing Officer of MTN, Raul De, outlining the activities to be undertaken during the course of the month-long festival under the theme, ‘Surf, Smile and Snap,’ indicated that there would be a Selfie competition across the country.
He noted that the populace would be educated on the various data available on the market, adding that the programme would be aired on radio and television.
‘We will establish data clinics across the 10 regions to respond to the needs of people on issues relating to the internet.
