Saturday’s defeat represents the first time that Wigan have lost a home tie in the competition since 1986, coincidentally also to Castleford.
The Tigers will be hoping that record is an omen, as they went on to lift the trophy that year, edging out Hull KR 15-14 in the final at Wembley, and Daryl Powell’s men will now face Widnes Vikings in the last four.
James Clare’s try sent the visitors into half-time with a 6-0 advantage, but Castleford’s lead was reduced to two points just after the hour mark when Liam Farrell crossed for Wigan, Matty Smith missing the conversion.
Kirk Dixon then collected Jake Webster’s pass to score 10 minutes from time and further extend Cas’ lead, and the result was put beyond doubt as Lee Jewitt went over close to the posts to send his team through.
While Castleford will take on Widnes for a place at Wembley, Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves will clash in the other semi-final.
Leeds survived a huge scare against Championship outfit Leigh Centurions to eventually prevail 25-12 at Headingley.
The Rhinos, who have lost all six of their final appearances since last lifting the trophy in 1999, forged ahead through Ryan Hall’s early try.
Tom Spencer and Tom Armstrong, however, both went over to see Leigh move 12-6 in front.
The Rhinos were level by half-time thanks to Stevie Ward’s score before both sides were reduced to 12 men shortly after the interval when Jamie Peacock and Matt Sarsfield were sin-binned for fighting.
With the scores remaining level until seven minutes from time, tries from Robbie Ward and Zak Hardaker sandwiched a Kevin Sinfield drop goal as Leeds showed their strength in the closing stages.
Meanwhile, the Wolves, winners in 2009, 2010 and 2012, breezed past a beleaguered Bradford Bulls 46-10 on Sunday at Odsal, Richie Myler and Joel Monaghan both scoring braces as Warrington ran in eight tries in total.
Elsewhere, Widnes made light work of second-tier side Keighley Cougars, Tom Gilmore running in three of the Vikings’ 10 tries in a 56-6 mauling of their opponents.
